SUNDIAL

Paris, 18th century
Master Delure
Silver, glass, steel, mastic (?);
casting, carving

A small 18th-century sundial
combined with a compass is part
of the museum's collection.
Created at a time when the tradition
of active appeal to the language of ancient
symbols and allegories was changing,
the clock embodies the desire to accentuate
the functional origins of a utilitarian object.
Allusion and personification in connection
with the theme of time were still in use,
but less frequently.
